Dear Dean - Three Years Old!

Dear Dean,

Good morning, birthday boy!  Today is your THIRD birthday!  You are growing up too fast.  I wish I could stop time and just keep you small forever, but I can't.

You have been such a joy in my life -- from the time we found out we were pregnant with you.  You are so full of life.  You LOVE to laugh and have a good time.  Everyone that meets you tells us how awesome you are.  We couldn't be more proud of you.

You are really tall and skinny, which is probably because you are always so busy running around and playing.  You eat all the time, but can sometimes be a little picky about what you want to eat and when.  You love all food though.  When we asked you what you wanted for your birthday dinner, you said, "Mushrooms!!"  You also love snacks and milk.  I'm not sure that you have a favorite food, but you do ask for seconds and even thirds when we have spaghetti.  Above all, you have really been into sweets lately -- cake, cookies, candy, ice cream, you name it!  We don't give you a lot, but you sure get hyper when you eat sugar.  Sometimes it's funny and sometimes you are just too crazy!

You love to play with your toys, especially your train set and Play-Doh.  You can keep yourself busy for hours with both of those.  We have a train set at home and also at Poppa and Mike's house.  Whenever we ask if you want to go to see Poppa and Mike, you always say you want to go play trains!  Both train sets were gifts from your Grimshaw cousins that they played with when they were little.  Lucy also loves to play with any toy you are playing with.  Sometimes when she comes to play with your toys, you get upset.  A few times you have pushed her over or gotten mad at her, which landed you in time out.  Now when she comes to play with your toys I tell you to say, "Mom/Dad, I need help!"  I think it's pretty funny because I'll hear you yelling, "Mom, help!" all the time!!  I hate to tell you little guy, but your sister will always want to play with your toys and play with you.  She just LOVES you.

You love Lucy!  You tell her she's pretty and cute all the time.  You like to give her hugs (sometimes it looks like headlocks) and kisses.  When she goes to bed at night, you always tell her goodnight and give her kisses.  You are so kind with her (when she isn't messing with your toys!).  Sometimes you even share your snacks with her.

Your speech and vocabulary are amazing.  You say the funniest things.  The other day you told us about watching a movie called "Mickey's Frightening Castle".  You pronounce almost all words correctly.  If you don't, then we repeat the words back to you until you say it right.  You say things like, "I don't want oranges anyhow." or "I'm really frustrated right now.  I think I'm too wound up."  We love to listen to you tell stories and talk.  You never stop talking in the car.  You can talk the whole way from one place to another.  If we aren't paying attention, then you will keep saying our name over and over.  You are starting to tell more and more of your own stories.  You have a great imagination.  You and Dad read books together every night before bed and laugh so much.  You memorize what the books are about and then tell the story back to us as you look through it.  You are learning so much and are SO smart.  You have been able to say your ABCs for a long time, but you pronounce every letter correctly and even enunciate LMNOP so that the letters don't just run together.  You've started to even say the letters wrong in places to see if we catch it and then laugh when we point it out.  You do the same thing with words, stories, and other songs.  You will change things up or change how you pronounce it to see what we say.  You think it is so funny.  You're too smart for your own good!

You are a problem solver.  It's fun to watch the wheels turn in your head as you solve a problem.  If there is something that is up too high for you to grab, then you try to figure out ways to get it down.  Or if something is stuck, then you try a bunch of different methods to get it out.

You still take naps for about 2.5 to 3 hours a day.  You aren't as much of a mess when you skip a nap now as you have been in the past, but you definitely still need to nap.  You are aware of the difference in night and day.  When it gets light out in the morning, you run into our bedroom to wake us up saying, "Look, Mom!  It's time to wake up.  It's bright outside!"  Thankfully, the summer is over and it stays darker longer in the morning.  You were waking up really early for a while!!

You have been potty trained since about March/April.  You have only had accidents at night or during bedtime, but really not very many.  You are very aware of when you need to go.  You tell Dad to leave the bathroom so that you can have some privacy when you're doing your business.  You like to read a book at bedtime before telling Dad you're finished.  You're such a crack up.

I could go on and on about your forever, Dean.  You are just the best son I could have ever dreamed up.  I'm so proud of all that you've done so far in your little life.  You are kind, gentle, and thoughtful.  You love to have fun, laugh, and play.  You love to play with kids and make new friends.  Your imagination, memory, and communication make our day-to-day life so enjoyable.  I just love being your mom.

Your Dad, Lucy, and I love you so very much.

Happy birthday, my little guy.

Love,

Mom
